Rewind: Aan Paavam

Cast: Pandiyan, Seetha, Pandiarajan, V K Ramasamy
Music: Ilaiyaraaja
Direction: Pandiarajan

The opening sequence of this film has a group of villagers offering prayers on behalf of Ramasamy (played by V K Ramasamy). An astonished bystander questions why they are praying on behalf of Ramasamy and is he a politician? The guy next to him says, “A politician will only build hospitals and roads, Ramasamy has done better”. This is obviously an over-statement which is used as a tool of humour. When the real statement is seen, you burst into laughter. Here Ramasamy has built a touring talkie (movie theatre). We see different people reacting to this opening ceremony and one couple delivers a double entendre about breast feeding. We also get a funny world play on Kamala (a girl name and a type of orange).

In this long opening stretch, we get three types of comedy- Satire, adult and wordplay. The film is written with back-to-back humorous scenes. The writing is clean that even the separate comedy track of Janagaraj’s doesn’t seem off the place. The film also beautifully brings meaning to the title of the film. The film’s characters are instantly likable and the comedy is written between every two characters, for instance the amazing comedy between Chinna Pandi (played by Pandiarajan) and his grandma.

This is considered as one of the finest comedy films to be made in Tamil cinema as there is comedy in every scene. There is comedy suggestively also, for instance the scene where Periya Pandi (played by Pandiyan) finds out that his younger brother is selling black tickets, he starts chasing him and camera shows the movie poster ‘Nalla thambi’ (good young brother). The film’s writing and direction is complimented by mesmerizing background score. Be it a fight sequence or a romance scene, the background score elevates the scene. Though ‘Kadhal Kasukuthaiya’ song is misplaced, the song is an ever green hit.
