Pattas Review

“Dhanush’s persona tries hard to save this obvious film about Adimurai and revenge”

Cast: Dhanush, Sneha, Mahreen Pirzada
Music: Vivek-Mervin
Direction: R S Durai Senthilkumar

Pattas is the nick name of Sakthi (played by Dhanush) who is involved in petty thefts along with his friend Puncture (played by KPY Sathish). Dhanush looks young and energetic in this role, whereas he has also played another role as Sakthi’s father, Dhiraviyam Perumal. In the father role, he is more mature and poised. Dhanush nails both the roles and shows difference from body language to eye twitching. Dhiravaiyam Perumal is a practitioner and teacher of Adimurai, an ancient martial arts form that has roots in Tamil Nadu. The film tries to portray the importance of this martial arts form, which is considered as mother of the modern martial arts forms.

The film’s structure is basic and the whole story becomes obvious within 20 minutes of the film. As said before Dhanush is super energetic as Sakthi and Sneha get a meaty role as Kanyakumari, Dhiraviyam Perumal’s wife. I appreciate the way heroine’s character is written within the main story narrative. Though her character doesn’t have much to contribute to the narrative, it doesn’t intrude the narrative. Sakthi steals from the office where Sadhana (played by Mahreen Pirzada) works and Kanyakumari comes to the same office to kill its owner. The crisscross of events among these characters were interesting to watch.

There were good moments in the film like the way Sakthi’s ambidexterity was shown and used in the film or the way how Adimurai is eradicated. I was glad that the film did not portray any corporate or country to be the reason for Adimurai’s extinction. The film is about Adimurai and the details that’s shown about the martial arts is very minimum. A scene where Kanyakumari tells a particular move to Sakthi and he follows it. The scene would have been a great goosebumps moment if we had known what Kanyakumari is saying. The film lacked punch because it let us knew only a few things about Adimurai and banked more on Dhanush’s persona.

Verdict: Dhanush’s persona tries hard to save this obvious film about Adimurai and revenge
