#Rewind: Kadhalikka Neramillai

Cast: Muthuraman, Nagesh, T S Balaiah, Rajasree
Music: Viswanathan- Ramamoorthy
Direction: C V Sridhar

Kadhalikka Neramillai is a 1964 romantic-comedy directed by C V Sridhar. The film’s title credits have paintings as background and one such painting transforms into a song with Vasu (Muthuraman) and Kanchana (Kanchana). They are first couple in the film. The song is a duet, so we know that they are already in love. After the song Kanchana meets her sister, Nirmala (Rajaree). They both travel to Coimbatore from Madras. In Coimbatore she meets Ashok (Ravichandran) who protests for his job to her father, Viswanathan (T S Balaiah). This is the second couple in the film, the couple that drives the story. In this love, there is persuasion of love by Ashok. The third and lost couple of this film is Chellappa (Nagesh) and Meena (Sachu). This couple realizes their love after a long time.

Despite three romance stories, the film lacks the romanticism. One of the reason would be the third couple (Chellappa & Meena) story is treated as comedy rather than a love story. Chellappa is an aspiring film director who wants to direct a Tamil film in his father’s money. He finds Meena and selects her to be the actress for the film he is going to direct. Their story has hilarious moments about how Chellappa finds financing for his film and how he teaches acting to her. This story track is considered as Gopu’s (Co-writer) masterpiece.

Another reason for lack of romanticism is because the film’s comedy works really well. Thanks to the brilliant casting of Nagesh and Balaiah. Balaiah plays a naïve character and his body language just brings out laughter. The story telling scene between Nagesh and Balaiah is wonderfully hilarious with a pinch of horror. The scene has gained a cult status among the audience. Apparently there is no time for poetic romance in the screenplay (Kadhalukku neramillai). Yet the film features as one of the best comedy film by Crazy Mohan, Y G Mahendran.

Kadhalikka Neramillai, meaning no time for love, has a title song and many other iconic songs. Almost every song is well placed to the situation except the last two songs, Naalaam Naalaam & Nenjathai Alli, which intrudes the narrative. One aspect I loved was how the couple, Vasu & Kanchana doesn’t face any problem in their pursuit of marriage where Ashok & Nirmala has to go through many problems It’s similar to how much time we spend on each one’s love story. We spend good amount of time on the later couple than the former.
