Bhoothakaalam Review: Rahul Sadasivan delivers a spine-chilling experience

Bhoothakaalam Review

Cast: Shane Nigam, Revathy, James Eliya
Music: Gopi Sundar
Direction: Rahul Sadasivan

Before the title credits, we get a prologue kind of sequence where Vinu’s (Shane Nigam) grandmother is lying on the bed, we hear door opening sounds and footsteps approaching steps. The camera zooms to the grandmother’s eyes and fades out for tittle credits. A few minutes before this sequence, we see how Vinu is irritated about changing diapers for her. His angst is clearly shown. We start to wonder if Vinu is the one who killed his grandmother.

The writing lets us ponder this angle more when he starts experiencing supernatural activities, especially involving his grandmother’s imagery. Vinu is living with his mother Asha (Revathy), who is suffering from clinical depression. Vinu discontinued his MBBS, completes DPharma and is now jobless. They both don’t share a good relationship. When Asha is weeping over the loss her mother, Vinu casually ignores and continues to eat. The supernatural proceedings bring them together. Their journey towards the bonding is superbly portrayed by Shane and Revathy.

Though the initial stretches seemed to set a base for crime thriller, it turned out to be horror genre. It’s the same haunted house scenario with a mysterious past. But it’s refreshing how they bring in this concept into the film. What’s even more fascinating is that the ghosts doesn’t get a solution at the end of the film as compared to our other horror films. The cinematography and music is used well to bring the horror elements without using any jump scares they managed to deliver a great horror experience.

Verdict: Rahul Sadasivan delivers a spine-chilling experience with Bhoothakaalam
