Puzhu Review: The film explores two plot lines together leaving us confused

Puzhu Review

Cast: Mammootty, Parvathy Thiruvoth, Vasudev Sajeesh, Nedumuni Venu
Music: Jakes Bejoy
Direction: Ratheena

Puzhu centers around Kuttan (Mammootty) who is a single parent raising his son, RIshikesh a.k.a Kichu is a strict authoritative style. Kichu doesn’t share a loving relationship with him. He tries to hide things from his father. He is so annoyed that he takes a toy gun and shoots the photo of Kuttan. Among the many rules laid out by Kuttan, one rule is not to get food from other people. By this he means people from other castes.

Kuttan is from a Bramin caste and he holds the caste pride high. He lives in a gated community where there are only people from his caste and hence they don’t have CCTV cameras. He gives a disgusted reaction when a delivery guy joins him in the lift. When someone tries to kill him, he always suspects or shouts at lower caste people.

His sister, Bharathi (Parvathy Thiruvoth), marries Kuttapan (Appunni Sasi), a guy from scheduled caste. This incident, according to him, has brought him a lot of embarrassment. He and Bharathi were not in talking terms. The film is a slow burn mystery that works well as we don’t know we are trying to kill him. We suspect Kichu, while Kuttan suspects many others including Kuttapan.

Mammooty is fantastic at playing Kuttan. He shoulders the entire film with his stellar performance. The film falls apart in its final act. We get to know about the past life of Kuttan where he was a police officer. The writing doesn’t pull off the final act in a convincing way. The story about him and his sister was great but by bringing in his past life, the film ending became quite confusing.

Verdict: The film explores two plotlines together leaving us confused
